The most beautiful view of Rome can be enjoyed from this hill. However, Janiculum, just like the Pincio Hill near Piazza del Popolo, does not count as one of the seven Roman Hills.
Due to its strategic position, this hill was an integral part of the city’s defense. Garibaldi’s troops fought against the French here in 1849.
This is why Gianicolo is full of monuments dedicated to Garibaldi and heroes who fought for Italian independence.
